Soo Locks

The Soo Locks are sluices on the River Saint Marys River at Sault Ste. Marie on the border between Canada and the United States. The lock is located on the waterway that connects Lake Superior with Lake Huron and the other Great Lakes.

A first lock was built in 1798 by the Northwest Trading Company on the Canadian side, but destroyed already in 1814 in the British -American War. 1837 on the American side of the building of the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Started Marie ( Michigan) by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and completed in 1855.

This was followed by

  • The Canadian Soo Lock: Built in 1895, today only for tourist boats in operation
  • The Davis Lock: built in 1914, 411 meters long, 24 meters wide
  • The Sabin Lock: built in 1919, but no longer in operation
  • The MacArthur Lock: Built in 1943, 244 meters long, 24 meters wide
  • The Poe Lock: newly built in 1968, 366 meters long, 34 meters wide

The Soo Locks on the crossing Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge was released on 31 October 1962.

The lock facilities now manufacture around 10,000 ships per year from ..
