Sorhagenia

Sorhagenia rhamniella

Sorhagenia is a genus of butterflies of the family splendor butterfly ( Cosmopterigidae ).

Features

The head of the moth is scaly smooth. The labial palps are straight and fairly short. The forewings are lanceolate and have a gloomy brownish gray ground color. On the fore wings are four, some great spots protruding scales. The hind wings are lanceolate and narrower than the forewings. They are pale gray to dark gray.

The genital armature of the males is symmetric. The uncus is short, truncate or pointed. The Valven have a separated cucullus and saccule and a large ampulla. The juxtaposition is sclerotized triangular or trapezoidal and strong. The Vinculum is wide, a sac is not present. The aedeagus is short, the cecum penis is saccular and distal tubular. The 7th Abdominalsternit is sclerotized and rear frequently occupied with a series of coarse bristles.

In females, the apophyses are of equal length, the anterior Apophyses are often associated with a sclerotized band. The ostium is surrounded by a heavily sclerotized genital plate having laterally triangular, conical or band-shaped protrusion. The antrum is sclerotized and often bulbous front. The ductus bursae is provided with needles and wrinkled. The corpus bursae is round or oval in shape and provided with two funnel-shaped signals, which have a spike in the middle.

Most species of the genus Sorhagenia habitually can not be reliably distinguished. For the examination of the genital armature, it is often not necessary to dissect the moth. In the males, the scales of the anal tuft can be removed to determine the size and shape of cucullus, ampulla and saccule. In females, the upper part of the genital plate is visible through the removal of the shed at the rear edge of the sixth sternite. This is to determine the most adequate.

Dissemination

The genus is represented in Europe with four species. Two species occur in Asia Minor. Other species are known from the Russian Far East and North America.

Biology

The caterpillars of the genus live either monophagous or oligophagous on buckthorn family ( Rhamnaceae ).
