Sōtarō Yasui

Sotaro Yasui (Japanese安井 曾 太郎, born May 17 1888 in Kyoto, † December 16, 1955 in Yugawara, Kanagawa Prefecture) was a Japanese painter.

Life and work

Yasui was the son of a wholesaler of woolen products. He began his artistic training at Shogoin Yōga Kenkyujo (圣 护 院 洋 画 研究所, dt " Shogoin - Research Institute of Western painting "). There he was a student of Asai Chū. With 19 years Yasui moved to Paris and studied at the Académie Julian under Jean- Paul Laurens 1907-1914 painting.

Initially was Yasuis work first under the influence of Gustave Courbet and later under that of Cézanne. After he returned to his home, although he painted more western style, but freed himself from the influence of French painting and developed his own visual language. 1936 founded Yasui, along with other artists, the artists' group Issui -kai. Yasui became known for his portraits awareness.
