Sottoceneri

As Sottoceneri the southern part of the Swiss canton of Ticino is known, in contrast to the northern part Sopraceneri. The name Sottoceneri means " below the Monte Ceneri ," the ridge that separates the Magadinoebene from Vedeggio Valley. For the districts of Lugano and Mendrisio Sottoceneri include (the latter also referred to as Mendrisio ).

Geology

The soils are mainly calcareous here and consist of alkaline and clayey soil. The climate is mild and already almost Mediterranean.
