Soubise (Charente-Maritime)

Soubise is a commune with 2852 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Charente -Maritime in the Poitou -Charentes; it belongs to Arrondissement Rochefort Canton and Saint- Agnant. The community is a member of the Association of Municipalities Communauté de communes du Sud Charente.

Geography

The place is situated on the south bank of the mouth of the Charente between Rochefort and the Atlantic Ocean.

History

Soubise was formerly a major transit station as the crossing of the Charente. In September 1346 the place of Henry of Grosmont was conquered. 1667 Seigneurie Soubise for the house of Rohan was raised to the principality (see Prince of Soubise ).

Attractions

  • The Hôtel de Rohan or Hospice de Soubise dates from the 17th century and today serves as the Hôtel de Ville (City Hall)
