Souspierre

Sous Pierre is a commune with 98 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Rhône-Alpes region in the Drome region; it belongs to the canton in the arrondissement of Nyons Dieulefit.

Geography

Sous Pierre is located between Lyon and Avignon at an average altitude of 270 meters above sea level, ten kilometers west of Dieulefit and 17 kilometers east of Montelimar in the valley of Jabron. The nearby towns are Salettes, La Bégude -de- Mazenc, Le Poet-Laval and Eyzahut.

History

The oldest mention as Sopeyra is found in a deed of gift of the Duke Adémar de Valence from 1219 to the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, ie the Maltese Coming of Le Poet-Laval. 1562 place is officially certified as Suppiere. The inhabitants are called Souspierrois or Souspierroises.
