South African Orienteering Federation

The South African Orienteering Federation (abbreviated SAOF ) is the national Orienteering Association of South Africa. It was founded in 1983 and is a member of the International Orienteering Federation (IOF ) since 1992. The association is a member of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee ( SASCOC ).

History

After the first orienteering events in 1981 in Cape Town and Johannesburg in 1982 and the subsequent creation of orienteering clubs the SAOF was founded in 1983. That same year, the first South African championships were held in Cape Town, held annually since. Because of the prevailing apartheid in South Africa, the SAOF was not included in the World Federation IOF. Only after the political changes of the early 1990s, the SAOF 1992 was recorded. The following year, started in the United States for the first time athletes from South Africa at the World Orienteering Championships.

Clubs

There are currently (as of 2013) eight orienteering clubs in South Africa. Four of them, namely the clubs Adventure Racing Club, RAC Orienteers, edge Orienteering Club and the Wits Orienteering Club are located in Johannesburg. From Cape Town clubs Peninsula Orienteering Club and UCTMSC come. The association Tukkies Orienteering Club is based in Pretoria, Durban Orienteering Club in Durban.
