South Pars / North Dome Gas-Condensate field

The South Pars gas field ( engl. South Pars Gas Condensate field), including the North - field, or North Gas Field (English North Dome Field), is the largest discovered gas field in the world, which is not part of an oil reservoir, and claimed and exploited by Qatar and Iran.

Location and capacity

The gas field is located in the Persian Gulf and stretches from Qatar's coast across almost the entire width of the estuary. The area of the gas field is almost 10,000 km ², of which are little more than 2/ 3 in Qatar. The gas reserves of the field amount to an estimated 1,300 TCF ( trillion cubic feet german, trillion cubic feet ), which is about 221 billion boe (barrels of oil equivalent ). About 500 TCF lie on Iranian territory.

North field

The Northern Field or North Dome Field in Qatar is located on the territory of Qatar part of the South Pars gas field. It extends off the coast of Qatar over an area of 6,000 km ² and contains 900 TCF ( trillion cubic feet german, trillion (10 ¹ ²) cubic feet ) as about 20 % of the known natural gas reserves. To export the natural gas industry Ras Laffan was founded.

History

Parts of the gas field - the North Field - were discovered side in collaboration with Shell in Qatar in 1971. Production began in 1989. Iranian side of the first discovery dates from the year 1990, which began development in several phases through the Pars Oil and Gas Company 2003.

Was discovered in the North field in 1971; in 1991 the first phase of development by the consortium Northfield Alpha was completed to meet local demand and natural gas was produced. In 1996, the export of liquefied natural gas for the Japanese companies Chubu Electric Power by the Qatar Liquefied Gas Company Ltd.. ( Qatargas ). Qatargas is one of Qatar Petroleum 65%, Total 10%, ExxonMobil 10%, Mitsui and Marubeni to 7.5 % to 7.5 %. 2005 should be a total of 450 BCF ( billion cubic feet) of liquefied by Qatargas. The second consortium is already producing the Ras Laffan Liquefied Natural Gas Company Ltd.. ( RasGas ), owned by Qatar Petroleum to 63 %, ExxonMobil 25%, the Japanese Itochu Corporation and Nissho Iwai to 4 % and 3 %, and the Korean KORAS to 5%, which provide mainly to South Korea and Japan.

By Dolphin Project 2004 natural gas is supplied from the North field by a submarine pipeline to Tawila in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and Jebel Ali in the Emirate of Dubai since the end. There are transported 2 BCF of natural gas.
