South Tarawa

South Tarawa ( also Teinainano Urban Council or TUC) is the provincial capital of the central Pacific Republic of Kiribati. It has about 34,000 inhabitants (as of 2010).

The island was Bairiki, also referred to as the capital of the island nation because of the previous concentration of government agencies, which are now distributed in three main islands.

Geography

South Tarawa covers the southern islands of the atoll of Tarawa, from East to West: Tanaea, Bonriki ( with airport and Bikenibeu ), Eita, Ambo ( with Parliament Building ), and Nanikai Bairiki. The total area of the district is 14.09 km ² (without Betio ). Betio forms for some time a separate district ( Betio Town Council) and is therefore no longer part of the district of South Tarawa.

History

During World War II South Tarawa was Betio with the focus of the battle for the Gilbert Islands.

Population

In the district of South Tarawa live with about 34,000 inhabitants about 33 % of the total population of the island republic. The populated area extends over more connected with navigable dams islands of the atoll and has an area of ​​nearly 30 km in length with a maximum width of just over one kilometer.
