Southern Nigeria Protectorate

The Protectorate of Southern Nigeria (English Southern Nigeria Protectorate ) was from 1900 to 1914 a British protectorate in West Africa. Together with the Protectorate of Northern Nigeria, it formed the basis of the former colony of Nigeria.

The Protectorate of Southern Nigeria was formed in 1900 from the Protectorate Niger Coast and territories of the Royal Niger Company trading company. On February 16, 1906, the colony of Lagos was connected to the protectorate, which was renamed the " Colony and Protectorate of Southern Nigeria " (English Colony and Protectorate of Southern Nigeria). In 1914 the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria united with the Protectorate of Northern Nigeria into a single colony, whose territories were administered but de facto segregated until 1946.

Southern Nigeria was until 1906 administered by a high commissioner, then by a governor. High Commissioners were Sir Ralph Denham Rayment Moor 1900-1904, who was represented in 1900 by Henry Gallwey, and from 1904 to 1906 Sir Walter Egerton. Governors were again 1906-1912 Walter Egerton, who was represented in 1907 by James Thorburn, and Sir Frederick Lugard 1912 to 1914, the same time held the office of Governor of Northern Nigeria.
