Sovata

Sovata (Hungarian Szováta ) is a spa town and a town in Mureş county in Romania.

Location

Sovata lies to the east of the Transylvanian Basin, on the western edge of the Gurghiu Mountains. At the edge of the city, the river flows into the Sovata Târnava Mica ( Small Kokel ). The county town Targu Mures is located about 60 km to the west.

History

Millions of years ago stretched along the western edge of the Eastern Carpathians, the lagoons of a sea of, in which salt was deposited. Sovata was first mentioned in 1581; then 16 families and a Székely - noble family Szovát were called.

In 1596 described the healing properties of the saline water. Even in the 18th century used the residents for medicinal purposes the saline water. In the second half of the 19th century, formed by the collapse of a sinkhole about a 5 -acre lake, which Lacu Ursu (such as " Bear Lake "). This is known by the phenomenon of Heliothermie, wherein the salt in the special scale stores the sun's heat. The Lacul Ursu and some other small lakes subjected to travelers; in the year 1882 200 tourists were registered. 1884 Sovata received the status of a spa. Be treated since gynecological, motor and endocrine diseases. Opened in 1901, the establishment Felső - Szováta ( Sovata de Sus ), which today is the center of Kurbetriebs. 1905 was the place a rail connection. During the First World War, a part of the spa facilities were destroyed. 1918/20 came Sovata that had belonged until then the Kingdom of Hungary, the Principality of Transylvania and Austria - Hungary to Romania. From 1921, the tourism experienced a new upswing. 1922 Sovata connection was to the power grid. The spa was at this stage a seasonal basis from 1 June to 30 September. Among the guests at that time also included members of the Romanian royal family. 1932 were registered four hotels and 110 guesthouses. From 1940 to 1944, the place was as a result of the Second Vienna Award temporarily back to Hungary. 1952 Sovata became a town. Since 1954, the spa business runs all year round. 1970 were built four other large hotels. To date, the city is very much dominated by tourism.

Population

In the 1850 census had a population of 1,268 on the territory of today's Hungary 1050 and 199 Romanians. To date, at the ratio of these nationalities has not changed; In 2002, in the town of 9,987 inhabitants registered, including 8,921 Hungarians, 820 Romanians and 202 Roma.

Traffic

Sovata is located on the railway line from Blaj after Praid. This is currently (2009) operated by the private operator RegioTrans. In both directions, at about six local trains daily. There are regular bus services to Sighisoara, Reghin and Targu Mures.
