Blind mouse

The Spalacidae are a rodent family from the group of mice -like ( Muroidea ). In this group, about 36 mainly underground living species are summarized.

Spalacidae are widespread in south-eastern Europe, in Asia and in northern and eastern Africa. They are characterized by reduced or reversed formed eyes, a short tail and a stocky build with a broad snout so exhibit similarities to other grave mammals, such as the moles.

The family is divided into four subfamilies:

  • Blind Mice ( Spalacinae )
  • Blindmulle ( Myospalacinae )
  • Root rats ( Rhizomyinae )
  • Mole rats ( Tachyoryctinae )
