Spectinomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic from Streptomyces ( Streptomyces spectabilis ).
Mechanism
The biological activity of spectinomycin due to the inhibition of protein synthesis at the ribosome. It binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit and inhibit protein synthesis in bacteria. Spectinomycin acts against gram- positive and gram -negative bacteria and is often used when penicillin- resistant organisms to be controlled.
Mutations in the 16S rRNA and the S5 protein of the 30S ribosomal subunit, can lead to resistance to spectinomycin.
Applications
It is injected for the treatment of gonorrhea, especially in patients who are allergic to penicillin. Furthermore, it finds application in molecular biology in selection media.
Side effects
As side effects itching, chills, and redness may occur.
