Speight's

Speight's is a brewery founded in 1876 and based in Dunedin, New Zealand.

History

Three workers of the former Wellpark Brewery in Dunedin in 1876 gave up her job and founded in a vacant factory building at the Rattray Street Dunedin James Speight & Brewery Co.

James Speight (1834-1887) as the seller, Charles Greenslade, (1843-1917) as a maltster and William Dawson (1852-1923) as a brewer presented on April 4, 1876 their first ale (beer) ago and got into a little more than 10 years into the largest brewery in New Zealand on, with export shares to Australia, Fiji and Hawaii.

In order to improve the quality of the brew, only spring water was used for beer brewing from 1884. 1906 and 1907 bought the two Dunedin Speight's brewery Joel's Red Lion and Strachan 's Victoria. Shortly before the death of the last co-founder of the brewery, William Dawson, merged Charles Speight, son of James Speight, the family business in 1923 with nine other breweries of New Zealand to the New Zealand Breweries.

After a major fire in 1940 that destroyed the brewery cellar and the malt house, the brewery was again completely rebuilt. In 1955 the first lager beer was brewed.

In August 1960, the Speight's brand was taken off the market and replaced by the name of Lucky, which produced significant adverse reactions in public. Only two months later, the tradition Speight's name came back to the Markt.1977 was the New Zealand Breweries Lion Broweries renamed and the traditional name of the brewery in Dunedin by renaming Branch of Lion Breweries Ltd.. returned in Speight's Brewery again.

From 1983, the brewery was also open to visitors and supplemented in 1997 by a Heritage Centre for visitors.

1988 finally followed the merger with Australia-based LD Nathan & Co. and went into the possession of the newly formed company. The Speight 's Brewery in Dunedin is still owned by the Lion Nathan Limited, Sydney, New South Wales.
