Spelaeodiscidae

Spelaeodiscus triarius ( Rossmaessler, 1839)

The Spelaeodiscidae are a small family of snails from the subordination of terrestrial snails ( gastropod ). It currently contains about 15 species ..

Features

The housings are rechtsgewunden, rarely linksgewunden. They are usually very small (less than 5 mm) and flattened - conical. During the embryonic coils are provided with a fine granulation, the post-embryonic turns to a more or less distinct radial ribbing. The mouth may include teeth, but fins are missing. The mouth rim is bent and mostly widened; rarely the mouth edge is simple. The navel is open, the depth varies, however. In hermaphroditic genitalia penis and epiphallus are available. The prostate is relatively short to medium in length with few acini. The cecum and the appendix penis are always present. The stem of the spermathecae is significantly swollen and without diverticula. Some species of the genus Spelaeodiscus are blind.

Geographical distribution and behavior

Almost all types of Spelaeodiscidae family are located in Southeastern Europe. Only one kind penetrates even to southern Poland. They live there very hidden under rocks or are pronounced cave dwellers. Therefore, the eyes are reduced in some species.

System

The Spelaeodiscidae family is now recognized by many authors. The Sites Fauna Europaea and Molluscs of central Europe treat the taxon as a subfamily of Strobilopsidae. Francisco Welter Schultes in AnimalBase, the genus Spelaeodiscus contrast to the Pupillidae. There are minor differences of the number of classes and their status contained.
