Strobilopsidae

Strobilops labyrinthicus (Say, 1817)

The Strobilopsidae are a small family of snails from the subordination of terrestrial snails ( gastropod ). Currently we know about 25 species of the family.

Features

The housing of the Strobilopsidae are tapered to be flattened and conical, wherein the diameter is always greater than the height. It is very small forms, which are only a few millimeters in size. There shall be set to about six turns. The mouth may be rounded or slightly angled. The mouth has lamellar teeth that sit relatively deep in the mouth. The mouth edge is usually bent and widened. The navel n is usually open, but may be narrow or wide. In hermaphroditic genitalia penis and epiphallus are developed. Caecum ( cecum ) and appendix on the penis usually present; the caecum is relatively short. Lolly's spermathecae, a diverticulum may be present or absent.

Geographical distribution and behavior

The representatives of the Strobilopsidae are common in Southeast Asia and in America. In America, the distribution area of southeast Canada ranges, on the eastern half of the United States, Northeast Mexico, Central America to Venezuela and northeastern Brazil. Other deposits are in the West Indies and the Galapagos Islands. It is unclear, the provision of a kind of Baja California. In Southeast Asia, the distribution area of Korea, Japan and China on the Philippines, Indonesia extends to New Guinea.

System

The systematic scope of the family is controversial. Some authors expect the Spelaeodiscidae as a family to the Strobilopsidae. This of course would expand the geographical distribution greatly.

Phylogeny

The internal phylogeny of Strobilopsidae is unknown. In contrast, a first relationship analysis ( Wade et al., 2006) was based on molecular data an unresolved trichotomy of Strobilopsidae, Lauriidae and a clade consisting of Orculidae and Pyramidulidae. The available data, however, is totally inadequate; it is based only on four taxa.
