Spiez Laboratory

The Spiez Laboratory ( Laboratoire Spiez French, Italian Laboratorio Spiez ) is the Swiss Federal Service for the protection of the population against nuclear, biological and chemical threats and hazards. It is the Federal Office for Civil Protection within the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS ) was assumed and is located in Spiez.

Areas

The Spiez Laboratory is divided into the following areas:

  • Development of fundamentals of NBC protective materials.
  • Operation of testing laboratories for the authorization and supervision of NBC protective materials.
  • Detection of biological warfare agents.
  • Support of the military biodefense formations.
  • Analysis of samples of any kind on C- warfare agents and related compounds ( accredited laboratory of confidence OPCW).
  • Evaluation of detection and decontamination agents for chemical warfare agents.
  • Production of chemical warfare agents as reference substances.
  • Studies of heavy metal pollution in the soil.
  • Specialist advice of Switzerland in international negotiations on disarmament and arms control.
  • Information to the authorities and the public on NBC hazards and protective measures.

International Activities

The Spiez Laboratory is an international recognized center of excellence and works with the United Nations ( UN), the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons ( OPCW), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP ), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA ) and the World Trade Organization ( WTO) together. Also, the Spiez Laboratory, diverse contributions in the NATO program " Partnership for Peace ".

The Spiez Laboratory in May 2006 was awarded the " Nineteenth Official OPCW Proficiency Test " among the 13 participating laboratories by the OPCW is the only laboratory in the world with the maximum score.
