The Spitter is a 6.5 km long stream in Tambach- Dietharz. It springs from several sources in the area of swamp Ebertswiese and flows through the Spittergrund, an up to 50 m wide and formed by water meadows and damp Hochstaudenfluren flat bottomed out. After 1.5 km run length, the Spitter crashes in three cascades over the rock step from Hühnberg - rock. The Spitterfall is one of the highest waterfalls in Thuringia. The Spitter opens in Tambach -Dietharz in the Apfelstädt and thus belongs to the river system of the Saale and Elbe, which drain to the North Sea. The Spitter is the only stream in the Thuringian Forest, whose headwaters south of the Rennsteig hiking trail, the ridge path over the mountain range, is located.
