In 1909 the brewery was founded under the name Shiner Brewing Association of German and Czech immigrants. First brewmaster was Hermann Weiss. After Weiss in 1914 moved to San Antonio, the company was leased from the German Kosmos Spoetzl and Oswald Petzold first and changed its name to the following year under the name of Home Brewing Company. Spoetzl bought the brewery and Petzold, finally, in 1915 and renamed them in Petzold & Spoetzl. During the period of Prohibition, the brewery produced only non- alcoholic beverages and ice. Five years later, 100,000 barrels of beer were produced, which corresponds to just over 5.8 million liters. Within the next ten years, this amount could be tripled again.
