Sprain

A sprain or distortion (Latin twist ) is an injury to a ligament ( ligament ) or a joint capsule, in which the collagen fibers of these structures are greatly overstretched.

Affected areas are mostly hand, foot or knee, most commonly a sprain occurs after a violent strain of the ankle (as supination ) on.

A swelling, often with a bruise is a result of a sprain. The treatment is carried out by

  • Cooling (anti-inflammatory, analgesic )
  • Restraint (stimulus reduction) and
  • High camps ( decongestant effect)

Of the joint (see PECH - rule). Necessary to check here whether the tapes were injured in continuity.

Evidence of a sprain may include pain (especially with a corresponding movement ), swelling and / or a blue discoloration ( often resulting from a bruise ).

Even lighter ligament injuries often lead to chronic instability, in which case a series of injuries over the years come together in a pronounced " flail joint ". This then leads often at a young age in osteoarthritis, and mostly in physically active people. Recommend orthopedists, better more often than you think it necessary to consult a trauma or orthopedic surgeons. A non-medical is hardly to be distinguished in a position between minor and less minor injuries. The intensity of the pain can be deceiving, also a momentous injury is not necessarily painful.
