Spring (Rachmaninoff)

Spring (often Spring, Russian Весна ) is a secular cantata for baritone, mixed choir and orchestra by Sergei Rachmaninoff, op 20

Based Upon the 1863 Green seal resulting noise (Russian Зеленый Шум ) by Nikolai Nekrasov. It is about a cuckolded husband in the late summer, the desire for revenge against his wife entertains during the long winter months, which are transformed by the arrival of spring in clemency and forgiveness.

Rachmaninoff wrote the work calculated in the year of his marriage to Natalya Satina, 1902. The performance time is about 16-18 min. The work has already opera -like trains and prepares the ground for a few years later completed opera Francesca da Rimini and The Miserly Knight. Just as the title role in the miserly knight, the baritone solo is written in the spring of Rachmaninov's friend Fyodor Chaliapin.
