Sprint (running)

As a Sprint or short distance running is called in athletics and other sports in which it comes to moving within a track in the shortest possible time, those disciplines in which the maximum speeds are achieved which allows the human organism.

Sprint in athletics

In athletics, the sprints are 50 to 400 feet long. A distinction is generally between short and long sprint, with distances over 200 meters in length are referred to as long sprint. The routes 100, 200 and 400 meters, 100 meter hurdles ( women), 110 meter hurdles ( men ) and 400 meters hurdles Olympic disciplines. The short -distance running is the oldest Olympic sport. Crucial to the definition of medium and long distances is in the running tracks of athletics, the power supply: It is carried out in the sprint predominantly by reaction of high-energy phosphate stores (ATP, creatine phosphate) and lactic acid fermentation (see the article in energy supply ). The speeds achieved here can be maintained up to about 40 seconds of the athletes.

Other Sports

When swimming are considered sprints 25 - to 200 -meter distances. The routes 50, 100 and 200 meters are Olympic disciplines. For the swimming sprints the distinction on the form of energy provision applies only to a limited, already the 200 - meter distance is to be considered under this criterion as an endurance distance.

In track cycling will (formerly flyer race) in the sprint down the last 200 to 250 m in maximum speed. In this race, over a distance of 600 m to 1000 m ( according to the rules about two or three rounds, depending on the path length ) is discharged depends, however, especially on the final velocity and on the ability to develop a high with tactical resources properly use speed. Therefore, the speeds are based on the last 200 m - this is taken in every race - often well below the maximum capabilities of the athletes.

In speed skating are as Sprint routes 100, 500 and 1000 meter run. The 100-meter are not currently running, the other two routes are also Olympic disciplines.

In American football the so-called 40 - yard dash is considered to be the most common indicator of acceleration and speed of a player.

In other sports, such as rowing, canoeing and cross-country skiing, is sometimes in the vernacular of sprints talk. However, these disciplines are unique endurance events from the viewpoint of energy supply.
