Spyridon Xyndas

Xyndas Spyridon (Greek Σπυρίδων Ξύνδας, also Italianized Spiridione Xinda, * 1812 in Corfu, † 1896 in Athens ) was a Greek composer of classical music of the so called Ionian School.

Xyndas began at the age of eleven years with music theory studies with the composer Nikolaos Mantzaros - Chalkiopoulos. In addition, he trained for guitarists. After the end of the lesson in Corfu he continued his studies in Naples and Milan. In 1840, he and his fellow student at Mantzaros Andonios Liveralis the only professional musicians founding members of the Philharmonic Society of Corfu at the Xyndas several years worked as a teacher.

Xyndas ' oeuvre comprises many compositions for guitar, especially vocal music. Two first operas Xyndas ' (Anna Winter 1855 by Dumas père, as I later Greek tris somatofylakes Οι τρεις σωματοφύλακες " The Three Musketeers" and Il Conte Giuliano ( 1857) ) were arrested prevailing in the musical life of the Ionian Islands Italian tradition.

Already in the 1840s Xyndas began composing concert ames and songs in Dimotiki, the popular language of the Greeks. The composition of Greek texts culminated in 1867 in Xyndas ' first Greek- opera, O ypopsifios ( Ο υποψήφιος, " The Candidate" ), which was the first work of this genre of Greek composers on a Greek libretto. The work on a text by Ioannis Rinopoulos is a funny, socially critical reflection of the political situation of the 19th century and its impact on the impoverished rural population and processed elements of folk music of the Ionian Islands. Other less successful operas were neogambros O ( Ο νεόγαμπρος, " The Newlyweds ", 1877) and I due Pretendenti ( 1878).

The extraordinary success of his "candidates" at the premiere in Athens moved Xyndas to move to the Greek capital, where he died in poverty, without having completed his last opera Galatea. Numerous manuscripts of his works were lost in bomb attacks in Corfu during the Second World War. Among his students is one of the composer and alleged son Xyndas ' Spyros Samaras.
