Sridhara

Sridhara was an Indian mathematician of the 9th century.

The time of his work arises from the fact that he is quoted by Aryabhata II ( 10th century ) and of Abhayadeva Suri ( 1050 ) and refers to Mahavira ( ninth century). He was a Hindu, and possibly born in Bengal and South India. Otherwise, little is known about him.

There are his works Trisatika (also called Patiganitasara ) and Patiganita attributed and some other works. They are sold by Bhaskara II (cited in 1150 ). The Pataganitasara is a shorter summary of the Patiganita. The Patiganita is preserved in one specimen (from Kashmir ). It is written in verse form, is no evidence and is only partially obtained ( the Pataganitasara gives a summary of what is missing ). They cover issues such elementary arithmetic operations (including the use of zero) and the drawing of square roots and cube roots, separated by whole and rational numbers, rules for the area of some planar polygons, formulas for series and number of combinations. The treatment is done on the basis of the solution of problems from diverse areas of everyday life. Is introduced to the text by the treatment of dimensions and coins. Text breaks off in the middle of the treatment of the contents of polygons.

His treatment of solving quadratic equations is known from a lost work on algebra and only on the representation at Bhaskara II.
