Srinagarind Dam

The Si Nakharin Dam ( Thai: เขื่อน ศรี น ค ริน ทร, also: Sri Nagarind Dam or Srinagarindra Dam) is the largest dam in western Thailand. The dam is in the district ( Amphoe ) Si Sawat in Kanchanaburi province.

The Si Nakharin dam regulates seasonal fluctuations in discharge, in order to guarantee a constant drain of about 140 m³ / s in the river Kwae Yai. In the dry season the water is used for irrigation. In addition, generates electricity for greater Bangkok area in a hydroelectric plant in 1160 GWh per year (or 1185 GWh). This is also the first pumped storage power plant in Thailand. The hydropower plant has an output capacity of 720 MW, of which the pumped storage plant has a share of 360 MW. The usable storage space is 7,470 million cubic meters in size, while the total storage space comprises 17,745 million m³.

The 1534 km ² large reservoir (Si Nakharin Lake ) is Chaloem Rattanakosin National Park.

The shut-off of the dam is a dam of rockfill material.

The construction of the dam forced 960 families to relocate to the east bank of the reservoir. They had their fertile farmland on the river abandon and got as a replacement rough wild land on the surrounding hills.

The Si Nakharin Dam has been criticized in Thailand publicly that it was built on the so-called " Sri Sawat Fault", a geological fault, which has caused earthquakes in the past.
