SS Martti Ragnar (1934)

The Martti Ragnar ( before 1934 Nordsjernen ) was a cargo ship from Finland.

It was measured with 2.262 GRT and had 89 m length, 12.70 m width and a draft of 6.10 m.

It belonged to the shipping company Nordström share Bolag R., & Co. OY in Lovisa. Was built the ship in 1903 in Denmark at the shipyard Helsingor Jernskibs & Maskinbyggeri share Selskab in Elsinore.

The Martti Ragnar sank on September 23, 1939 at 2:14 clock after ignition of three explosive cartridge that had been installed by a prize crew of U 4 ( Lieutenant Harro von Klot - Heydenfeldt ), in the North Sea 5 nautical miles south of Arendal in Norway in the marine grid square AN 3393rd

The crew of 24 men was dragged into two lifeboats to eight nautical miles off the Norwegian coast. The ship had loaded cellulose, sulfur and wood pulp, and was on the way to Ellesmere Port.
