St George's Channel

Geographical location

The St. George's Channel (English St George 's Channel, Welsh Sianel San SIOR, Irish Muir Bhreatan ) is a sea channel between Ireland and Wales. It connects the Irish Sea in the south to the Celtic Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The narrowest point is between Carnsore Point in County Wexford and St David 's Head, the westernmost point on the mainland of Wales in the county of Pembrokeshire.

Historically, the entire marine area between Ireland and southwest Britain from the Lleyn Peninsula was designated to Land's End and Cape Cornwall as St George channel. The name derives from a legend of the 14th century, after the St. George Channel have crossed on his journey from Byzantium to Britain.

The strait lying between the islands of New Britain and New Ireland in the Bismarck Archipelago is also called " St. George's Channel ."
