St Paul's Island

The St. Paul 's Islands ( paints Il- Gzejjer ta ' San Pawl, also Il- Gzejjer ta' Selmunett ) are two uninhabited island rocks of the Republic of Malta. The name in the singular St. Paul's Iceland is about as common as the two rocks by an isthmus ( Issillat ), respectively, which is less than 20 meters wide at its narrowest point and is flooded only in rough seas, and the complex therefore as a island is considered. Politically, the island belongs to the municipality of Mellieha.

The rocks are located about 100 m from the coast at the western end of St. Paul 's Bay and together have only an area of ​​less than 0.1 km ². The island has been uninhabited for decades, left his small hut and its fields on the island since the only farmer.

According to tradition, is said to have been shipwrecked in the year 59 AD the Apostle Paul at this point, as he was a prisoner on his way to Rome. The Apostle and the entire ship's crew managed to escape at that time swimming to the mainland. When the father of the ligands cited by Roman troops seriously ill, he was healed by Paul and thanks for the commander joined Christianity.
