The St Paul's School was founded in 1509 by John Colet the Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral and is one of nine schools that are called from 1868 based on the Clarendon Commission in the Public Schools Act.

History

The cathedral had been since the beginning of the 12th century a school, but this had fallen slowly. So John Colet founded a new school on a site to the north of the church. He was the son of the wealthy Sir Henry Colet (1430-1505), who had earned a lot of money as a businessman and twice Lord Mayor of London was. John Colet was the only surviving child of his parents, sole heir, he lived as a celibate priest, he bequeathed the bulk of his inheritance of the school. The school could allow herself that her original 153 students had to pay any school fees. The students were, however, obliged to bring their own wax candle, which was a time not inconsiderable issue.

The original school building was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666. The school was rebuilt in 1670. Another new building in 1822 at the Cheapside. But London grew in the 19th century, very strong and so a new school grounds was found on the outskirts of the city in Hammersmith. The building at 153 Hammersmith Road was home to the school of 1884 until 1968. Then the school moved to new premises, which had been built in Barnes next to the Hammersmith Bridge.

1904 decided the administrators of the John Colet Foundation, which administered the emerged from the legacy of the founder assets of the school 's founder, to set up his own school for girls. The St Paul 's Girls ' School was founded on Brook Green in Hammersmith, where it is located today. Since 1881 the school has its own Preparatory School Cole Court
