St. David's Island, Bermuda

Saint David's Iceland is an island in the far north- east of the western Atlantic archipelago Bermuda. It is part of St. George's Parish, an administrative area in the east of Bermuda.

Geography

Saint David's Iceland was originally a less than 2 km ² rugged island, such as old maps from the time of settlement of Bermuda in the 17th century is clearly visible. It was after 1940 - for the purpose of military use as an aircraft base - increased in several phases and completely changed in appearance. These were erected by Sandaufschüttungen solid land connections to the former north-west barrier island Longbird Iceland and the southeast, Cooper Iceland. In addition, written for another airfield on the south coast a narrow artificial peninsula reaching about 1,100 meters in the Bay Castle Harbour. Today, therefore, the land area of ​​the ( artificial island ) Saint David 's is a little over 2.6 km ². About half of the island's land area is currently occupied by the airfields and the former military buildings in the south. After the military bases were abandoned in 1995, include the runways now to LF Wade International Airport (until 2007: Bermuda International Airport).

With Bermuda's main island of Grand Bermuda Saint David's is connected through a 1000 meter long causeway ( The Causeway ). At the northern neighboring island of Saint George's leads a small bridge.
