St. George's Cathedral, Lviv

The St. George's Cathedral is a Church and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church Cathedral and is located in the Ukrainian city of Lviv.

History

The present cathedral was built on the site of 1363-1437, 1743-1744 broken Gothic church. It was built by the architect Bernard Meretyn. The foundation stone was laid in 1744. Two years later died of the Greek Catholic Bishop Athanasius Scheptyzkyj (1686-1746), who determined his estate to finance the construction. After the death Meretins 1759 the construction was directed to 1764 by Clement Fesinger. The exterior architecture was completed in 1772. The sculptures are the work of sculptor Johann Georg Lemberger Pinzel. The interior is decorated in the style of the late Baroque. The Cathedral houses an icon of the Theotokos, which was brought by Bishop Iosyf Shumliansky to Lviv. It is considered a precious relic.

In 1996 there was a restoration of the 400th anniversary of the Church Union of Brest. The cathedral is thus the binding symbol of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church with the Roman Catholic Church dar. In the St. George's Cathedral are the resting places of the Greek Catholic cardinals and metropolitans Sylwester Sembratowicz, Andrej Scheptyzkyj, Jossyf Slipyj, Volodymyr Sternjuk and Myroslaw Ljubatschiwskyj.
