Sylvester Sembratovych

Sylwester Cardinal Sembratowicz ( Ukrainian: Сильвестр Сембратович, Polish Sylwester Sembratowycz ) ( born September 3, 1836 in Deszinca, Congress Poland, now Poland, † August 4, 1898 in Lviv, crown land ( Austria ), now Ukraine) was a cardinal and archbishop of Lviv of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.

Life

Sylwester Sembratowicz was born in a Ruthenian family. His ordination took place on 1 November 1860 in Rome in the age of 24 years.

At 42 years, on 28 February 1879 Sembratowicz was appointed auxiliary bishop in the archeparchy Lviv and also titular bishop of Iuliopolis. The solemn consecration was performed by his uncle Josyf Sembratowicz in the Lviv Cathedral on April 20, 1879 at age 42.

The appointment as Archbishop of Lviv was made on 27 March 1885 at 48 years of age. The solemn elevation to cardinal took place on November 29, 1895, also the appointment as cardinal priest with the assignment of the titular church of Santo Stefano al Monte Celio.

In the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria he possessed as Lemberger Metropolitan over a Virilstimme in the Galician parliament.

Sylwester Cardinal Sembratowicz died at age 61, on August 4, 1898 in Lviv and was buried in the local cathedral.
