Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Lviv

The archeparchy Lviv ( Latin: Archieparchia Leopolitanus Ucrainorum ) is a location in Ukraine archeparchy of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, based in Lviv.

History

The Eparchy of Lviv was founded in 1539 by the transfer of the seat of the Orthodox Diocese Halyc, which was built in the middle of the twelfth century, and from 1303 until 1401 (transfer to Kiev ) Metropolitan seat.

The Church Union of Brest from 1596, at first they did not rule in itself, but came in 1677 in full communion with the Catholic Church.

Pope Pius VII in 1539 united the built Eparchy of Lviv with the Apostolic Constitution Ecclesia universalis In on February 22, 1807 the Eparchy Halyc and raised them to the Metropolitan Bishopric of Chelm eparchies and Przemysl.

On March 26, 1885, lost parts of its territory to the Eparchy of Ivano- Frankivsk.

On March 9 and 10, 1946, the Soviet authorities staged a false Synod, in which they made 216 in the St. George's Cathedral preloaded priest to sign a waiver of the Union of Brest. The more active in the underground Greek-Catholic Church was persecuted and had to suffer torture and deportation. Some were called martyrs and saints and belong to the "Twenty-five saints of the Greek Catholic Church."

On December 23, 1963, the archeparchy was raised to Großerzbistum. On 20 April 1993 she lost parts of their territory to the eparchies Sambir - Drohobych, Ternopil and Zboriv.

On November 25 1995 she lost parts of its territory to the Apostolic Exarchate of Kyiv - Vyshhorod. On July 21, 2000, she lost parts of their territory to the Eparchy of Sokal - Zhovkva. Since December 6, 2004, she was no longer a Metropolitan bishopric, but was again raised to the status of Metropolitan diocese on November 29, 2011. The seat of the Großerzbistums was moved to Kiev on 29 August 2005.

As the first Archbishop of Lviv was appointed on 10 November 2005 Archbishop Ihor Voznyak. The diocese area covers the central part of Lviv Oblast. The area shown in the map below yellow.
