St. Procopius Basilica in Třebíč

The Romanesque- Gothic St. Procopius' Basilica in Třebíč is the only surviving building of the company founded in the 12th century Monastery of the Assumption. The Basilica was added in 2003 along with the Jewish Quarter and the Jewish cemetery in the UNESCO list of world cultural and natural heritage of mankind.

History

The monastery was founded in 1101 by the Benedictines. Middle of the 13th century, the sacred building was replaced by an elongated three-aisled basilica with rosette windows and with a concealed in the vaulted porch portico.

The Benedictine monastery with the Church that belonged with its length of 100 m to the largest in Europe, experienced difficult times in its history. Among the Hussites, the church was partially destroyed, the Benedictine poverty-stricken, so until the end of the 16th century could be started with a renovation. Between 1298 and 1466 the monastery was under the provost Wollein. Another disaster turned dar. the Thirty Years War

The church was restored in 1725-1737 by the architect Franz Maximilian Kanka and 1924-1935 by K. Hilbert.

Exhibitions

In neighboring castle is a museum with an exhibition of Moravian Moldavite, rocks, minerals, pipes, and nativity scenes from Třebíč.
