Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz

The German State Philharmonic of the Rhineland -Palatinate is the largest and leading Symphony Orchestra of the Rhineland- Palatinate, headquartered in Ludwigshafen am Rhein. She gives concerts in Rhineland -Palatinate as well as at home and abroad.

The orchestra includes 86 musicians from 16 nations (as of season 2006 /2007). Chief conductor since the beginning of the season 2009/2010 Karl -Heinz Steffens.

Historical Review

In 1919 in Landau (Pfalz ) an orchestra club, consisting of representatives of some cities Palatine, music clubs and private patrons, the "State Symphony Orchestra for Palatinate and Saarland". After the inflation in 1923, the orchestra had to be renovated and converted into a GmbH. From the "State Symphony Orchestra ", the " Palatinate Orchestra " based in Ludwigshafen am Rhein. The restructuring initiated a phase of artistic success. As soloists and conductors were musicians of international standing to Ludwigshafen such as, but the violinist Adolf Busch and George Kulenkampff, even conductors such as Hermann Abendroth and Richard Strauss. In 1933 in the wake of new task distributions, the name was changed to " Saar Palatinate Orchestra " in 1941 to the war-related termination of gaming operations in 1944 in "State Symphony Orchestra Westmark ".

Soon after the war, the orchestra formed new and there began a renewed artistic upswing - from 1967 under the name " Philharmonic Orchestra of the Palatinate ". Instead of the Orchestral Society took over in 1974 the state of Rhineland -Palatinate sponsorship - with a corresponding change in the orchestra name to " Palatine Philharmonic State Orchestra Rhineland -Palatinate ". After the departure of the since 1960 the orchestra conducting Christoph Stepp took place after a brief interregnum 1978/1979 finally with the appointment of Christoph Eschenbach as artistic director to further consolidate the orchestra operating under the name State Philharmonic of the Rhineland -Palatinate, as it is now under the auspices of the federal state Rhineland- Palatinate.

Eschenbach intensified contacts with the international jet set, followed in 1983 by the conductor Leif Segerstam with concert performances of operas ( Ludwigshafen does not have its own opera game mode), acclaimed premieres of works of contemporary music and the further expansion of orchestral guest performances such as to Russia and to England. In 1985, still in Segerstam's time, the orchestra moved into its new home - the Philharmonie in Ludwigshafen am Rhein.

As of 1992 increased Bernhard Klee Orchestra chief use for works of new music, according to him, in 1997, Theodor Guschlbauer who raised his Philharmonic as " Pfälzischer musical director " for the internationally recognized versatility. January 1, 1998 finally took place the transformation of the State Philharmonic of the Rhineland -Palatinate in a country operation.

Since 1 January 2007, the orchestra has the name " German State Philharmonic of the Rhineland -Palatinate ."

Since August 2009, directs Karl-Heinz Steffens as General Music Director of the artistic skills of the orchestra. For the first time as Music Director at desk he stood on September 14, 2009 in the Art Nouveau Festhalle Landau celebrate the 90th anniversary of the State Philharmonic.

Range of activities

The German State Philharmonic of the Rhineland -Palatinate plays approximately 90 public concerts per season. Concert pedagogy
