Stade du 26 mars is the largest stadium in the Republic of Mali and one of the major sporting venues in West Africa. The stadium is located around 10 kilometers south east from the city center of the capital, Bamako, on the right bank of the Niger.

History

The name of the stadium is an allusion to the coup of the dictator Moussa Traoré which expired on 26 March 1991.

The stadium was built by a Chinese company in partnership with Malian company. The costs amounted to 25 million euros and were financed two-thirds of the state budget of the Malian government and a loan from the Chinese government.

The stadium with a constructed area of ​​7 hectares has a central main field, an adjacent training pitch, an eight-lane athletics running track and floodlit. The maximum of 60,000 -seat arena is primarily used for football matches. The stadium is the home venue of the Malian national football team and was also host the opening and final of the African Cup of Nations 2002.
