Stadtmuseum Rapperswil-Jona

The City Museum in Rapperswil -Jona was founded in 1943 as the " Museum of Local History of Rapperswil ." It is housed in Breny house and the tower of the same name, at the Herrenberg in the heart of the Old Town of Rapperswil, a part of the Swiss municipality of Rapperswil -Jona in the canton of St. Gallen.

Genesis

Under the patronage of the tourist office Rapperswil- Jona in 1943 parts of the property Paulina and Hein Rika Breny were set up as a local history museum of local history and art. The property ( Upper Halsgasse to 1960 ) arrived in 1958 as the legacy of the siblings Breny the property of the municipality of Rapperswil -Jona. Since then, the name Breny House and Breny Tower are common.

Activities and News

Structural renovation / new presentation of the collection

Use and location were 2008/2009 within the project " Janus " checked, presents the results public and presented to the citizens of Rapperswil -Jona in December 2009 to a vote. The City Museum was redeveloped from January 2010 to October 2012 and remained meanwhile closed to visitors. The need of renovation intermediate tract was canceled, replaced by a purposive construction and fit into the historic streetscape between the parish church and the Angel Place. The distinctive construction of the Interim tract serves both as an exhibition space as well as the opening up of Breny House and Breny Tower. The view of the city formative north side remained unchanged.

Capital and operating costs of around 5.6 million Swiss francs be worn equally between local community and political community Rapperswil -Jona. Simultaneously with the realization of the project Janus "the accrued maintenance work on the facades, windows and roofs of the historic building and the city wall at the expense of the budget of the local community have been addressed. The exhibition of the museum was renewed according to the latest and currently presents gänzjährig.

Collection priorities

Focus of the collection, along with temporary exhibitions, prehistoric and Roman archaeological finds from Seegelände and especially from the extensive excavations at Kempraten, the former Roman settlement Centum Prata. These exhibits are now available in the Canton Museum in St. Gallen. Other exhibits are medieval heraldic stones of the town of Rapperswil, a drinking cup of Countess Elisabeth of Rapperswil, a spätgogische living hall and sacred goldsmith's art, including the miter, the crosier cross particle monstrance and Pontifikalgegenstände from the monastery treasure of the Norbertine Ruti, which in June 1525 during the Reformation was lifted.

The new intermediate tract is home to the newly designed entrance and temporary exhibitions as well as a model of the city (total view of Rapperswil around 1800 ), information about the city history and city walls as well as examples of medieval Rapperswiler industry, such as weapons, pharmacy, shoemaking workshop and kiln pottery in the adjoining Breny house.

The previous conventional presentation of the collection objects has given way with completion of the new building a " scenic didactic mixture of historical experience and information transfer " key objects from the collection will be presented " in the interaction of visual and auditory reactions ," such as local businesses, exhibits on the history of the Circus Knie and historic city views with multi-media presentation.
