Stalwart (politics)

The stalwarts (English Solid, Strong, Brave ) were a group of conservative American Republicans who influenced U.S. policy in the late 19th century.

Known members of this faction of the Republican Party were Roscoe Conkling, Thomas C. Platt, Angus Cameron and Chester A. Arthur. The group was opposed to the reformist Half- Breeds; the only objective contradictions were, however, less in substantive issues than in the exploitation of insider relationships ( patronage system). Chester A. Arthur was vice president under James A. Garfield and was then President of the United States. In this office he followed though Garfield's attempts at reform, which he saw as a legacy.
