Standard Bank

Standard Bank is a banking group and a bank in southern Africa with branches and Others in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

It was created in 1862 under the name Standard Bank of British South Africa and was renamed in 1883 in Standard Bank of South Africa. The Bank has been active both in southern Africa, as well as in the UK. 1915, the first branch of Standard Bank Namibia today was opened in Lüderitz. 1962, there was a separation of activities in Africa and Europe. The African unit continued to operate under the name Standard Bank of South Africa, while the European unit of Standard Bank Ltd.. was that in 1969 with the Chartered Bank Standard Chartered Bank still active today merged. In the same year, the holding company Standard Bank Investment Corporation has been in South Africa (short: Stanbic ) founded, which gradually took over the shares in Standard Bank. 1987 this process was completed.

The African unit was initially due to the political situation in South Africa isolated only in South Africa and South West Africa (now Namibia) and actively expanded its business area very slowly to the other states in southern Africa. After the end of apartheid, the Institute was able to expand considerably.

The Bank provides financial services to private and corporate customers and has a network of over 746 branches in South Africa and 240 in the rest of Africa.
