Stanisław Barańczak

Stanisław Barańczak ( born November 13, 1946 in Poznań ) is a Polish poet, translator and literary critic. He also wrote under various pseudonyms (Barbara Stawiczak, Feliks Trzymałko i Szczęsny Dzierżankiewicz, Hieronim Brylka, JH Jan Hammel, Paweł Ustrzykowski, SB, Sabina Trwałczańska, Tomasz Niewierny ).

Barańczak applies not only to Ryszard Krynicki as one of the most important poets of the flow of Nowa Fala ( New Wave ). He graduated in Polish Studies at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, doctorate on literary theory and taught there. He worked at the same time in the editorial offices of various, sometimes appearing in the underground magazines. Since 1981 he has been professor of Slavic literatures at Harvard University in the United States. In 1983 he was co-founder of appearing in Paris Zeszyty Literackie ( Literary magazines ) and 1986-1990 editor in chief of The Polish Review; He is a regular contributor to the periodical Teksty Drugie ( The other texts ).

Barańczak translated works by Osip Mandelstam, Joseph Brodsky, John Donne, William Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, Andrew Marvell, Philip Larkin, James Merrill, Robert Frost, Charles Simic and other poets into Polish.

He was awarded the Kościelski Prize 1972, 1999 he was awarded for his collection of poems Chirurgiczna Precyzja the Nike Literary Prize, the most important literary award in Poland.

Barańczak is brother of the children's book author Małgorzata Musierowicz.
