Stanko Premrl

Stanko Premrl ( born September 28, 1880 in Podnanos, † March 14 1965 in Ljubljana) was a Slovenian composer.

He attended the grammar school and the theological seminar in Ljubljana and was ordained a priest in 1903. He then studied organ playing with Rudolf Dietrich and composition with Robert Fuchs at the Conservatory of Vienna.

From 1909 to 1939 he was choirmaster and organist at the Cathedral and from 1909 to 1945 organ teacher at the Conservatory, the Music Academy, the organ school, at the Theological Faculty of the University and at the seminary of Ljubljana. He earned a reputation as an extraordinary concert organist and organ improviser. Thirty-five years he gave the magazine Cerkveni glasbenik out ( The church musician), in which he has published numerous articles, essays, letters, and book reviews.

In addition to a Christmas Suite, a Sinfonietta, a cantata, chamber works and piano pieces he composed predominantly church music: Measuring, Requiem, Passions, Magnificat, Te Deum and Offertories as well as more than 2,000 songs, including Zdravljica after Prešeren that since the country's independence, the National anthem of Slovenia is.
