Robert Fuchs

Robert Fuchs ( * February 15, 1847 in Frauental at the Laßnitz, Styria, † February 19, 1927 in Vienna) was an Austrian composer and music teacher of romance.

Life

Robert Fuchs was born on February 15, 1847, the youngest of thirteen children in the small West Styrian municipality Frauental at the Laßnitz. He was the first teacher in Graz and then lived from 1865 until his death in Vienna. He studied with Anton Bruckner and Otto Felix Dessoff. As a final work of his studies he presented in 1867 a symphony. From 1875 to 1912 he was professor of theory at the Vienna Conservatory.

Famous students were Leo Fall, Richard Heuberger, Gustav Mahler, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Richard Strauss, Hugo Wolf, Jean Sibelius, Franz Schmidt, Franz Schreker, Erkki Melartin, Alexander von Zemlinsky and the zoologist Paul Kammerer. 1881 Beethoven prize he was awarded for his Piano Concerto. In the years 1894-1905 he was also organist at the Viennese court orchestra. He died four days after his 80th birthday, allegedly as the result of the efforts of his birthday celebration. He is on the Vienna Central Cemetery ( 33E -3-5 ) buried in an honorary grave dedicated.

In 1934 in Vienna Penzing ( 14th District ), the Robert Fox alley named after him.

Work

Robert Fuchs wrote during his life two operas ( " The King's Bride", 1889 and " The Devil's Bell", 1893), three symphonies, five orchestral serenades, four string quartets, a piano concerto, three piano sonatas, two cello sonatas, a viola sonata, a bass sonata, 6 violin sonatas, piano trios and string trio. He has also written pieces for organ, songs, sacred music, chamber music and other pieces for various ensembles. The first of his five serenades he wrote in 1874, with which he became famous and helped him to his nickname, " Fuchs Serenade ". Johannes Brahms praised and promoted Robert Fuchs. The two symphonies from the years 1886 and 1887 he was able to consolidate his popularity while he was not nearly so successful with his two operas.

Fame

Today, Fox is only rarely played, which is not only the fact that it has many of his famous pupil surpassed, but that he is often seen as Brahms imitator, so good imitators without own style. His posthumous reputation suffered not least an anecdote that no longer an informed judgment about the originality of the composer fox, but only their wit owes its enduring popularity: A well-known conductor or composer colleague told upon review of a new composition: " Fuchs, who have you all stolen. " However, this quip diverse contemporaries attributed (on the Internet, among others, the names of Johannes Brahms, Josef Hellmesberger, Max Reger and Felix Weingartner be hawked ), which does not speak for the credibility of the anecdote.
