Joseph Hellmesberger, Jr.

. Hellmesberger Joseph Jr., known as " Pepi " Hellmesberger ( born April 9, 1855 in Vienna, † April 26, 1907 ) was an Austrian composer, violinist and conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic subscription.

Life

Hellmesberger was the son of Austrian violinist and conductor Joseph Hellmesberger senior (1828-1893), who was also his first teacher. At the age of 15, he was second violinist as a member of his father's quartet ( Hellmesberger Quartet ), whose line he took over in 1887, at age 18, he joined as a violinist in the Vienna Court Opera. As concertmaster ( in the string section ) and a drummer ( in the wind instruments ), he began in 1875 the military service in the chapel of the Austrian Infantry Regiment No. 4, moved up in the same year as the band and in 1876 32er head of the military music of the " ". He held until 1878 this function. From 1878, he worked as a solo violinist at the Imperial Chapel and at the Court Opera (now Vienna State Opera ). Also starting in 1878, he was professor of violin at the Conservatory of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna (the predecessor institution of the Vienna Academy of Music). In 1890, he became the first Kapellmeister of the Vienna Court Orchestra and also served as Kapellmeister at the Ring Theatre. As the successor of Gustav Mahler, he headed from 1901 to 1903 the Philharmonic concerts. In 1903, he laid down for personal reasons, and went all Wiener functions as bandmaster at the Stuttgart Court Theatre. A year later, he returned to Vienna, became ill soon after his return and died in 1907.

His tomb is located at the Hietzing Cemetery (Group 15, Number 4 D).
