Stanley Haidasz

Stanley Haidasz PC ( born March 4, 1923 in Toronto, Ontario; † 6 June 2009) was a Canadian cardiologist and politician of the Liberal Party, the Federal Minister and Senator became the first Canadian politician of Polish descent.

Life

Haidasz came from a Polish family that emigrated from Stanislawów 1910 to Canada. After schooling, he studied medicine and earned a bachelor's degree in Physiology in addition ( B.Ph. ) and a Licentiate ( L.Ph. ) and a Doctor of Medicine ( MD) at the University of Toronto. After a post-graduate training in specialist cardiology at the University of Chicago, he worked as a cardiologist.

His political career began Haidasz as a candidate of the Liberal Party in the election of 10 June 1957 it was first elected as a member of the House of Commons and in this until his election defeat at the next general election on March 31, 1958 representing the electoral district of Trinity. In the elections of 18 June 1962 he was again elected a member of the lower house and belonged to this until his resignation on 23 March 1978 as representative of the constituency of Parkdale.

During this time he was first from May 1963 to February 1964 Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Health and Welfare, then the Minister for Foreign Affairs, January bis September 1966 the Minister for Affairs of northern Canada and Natural Resources. Subsequently, he was between October 1966 and April 1968 Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Indian Affairs and Development of Northern Canada and from August 1968 to October 1969 the Minister for Consumer and Corporate Affairs, before he for between October 1969 and September 1970, obviously Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister National Health and Welfare.

On November 27, 1972, he was Minister of State for Multiculturalism in the led by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau 20th Federal Cabinet and was thus appointed as the first Canadians of Polish descent to cabinet ministers. The minister he clothed to August 1974.

On March 23, 1978, he was appointed on the recommendation of Prime Minister Trudeau for the Senate District Toronto - Parkdale senator for Ontario and was once again the first Canadian of Polish descent of the Member of the Federal Senate was. After nearly twenty years of membership, he resigned from the Senate on March 4, 1998.

For his services he was twice an honorary doctorate namely, first as Philosophiae Doctor ( Ph.D.), on the other as Doctor of Administration ( D.Adm. ( Hon ) ).
