Starling

Common Myna ( Acridotheres tristis )

The Stare ( Sturnidae ) are a diverse family of birds belonging to the passerine birds ( Passeriformes ).

The family includes 27 genera, of which two are extinct, and about 120 species, five of which are extinct.

They are medium-sized passerines with strong feet. Their plumage is typically black with a metallic luster. Most species build their nests in cavities where they lay blue or white eggs. Their flight is strong and direct, and they are very gregarious. They like to live in the open field and feed on insects and fruit. Several species live around settlements and are omnivores.

Starlings are only in the Old World before, of course. Several European and Asian species have been introduced to North America and Australia. The most common members of this family in Europe is the Starling (Sturnus vulgaris).
