State highway (Italy)

As Strada Statale (German: " State Street ", both abbreviated SS) are roads of national importance in Italy designated under state administration. They usually connect cities, border crossings, airports, ports and other major centers. The state highway network in Italy has a length of 12,000 miles and is from the National Autonomous road operating company ANAS (Azienda Nazionale Autonoma delle Strade ) maintained.

History

The Italian road network, which already consisted of 8303 km of national roads, 44,671 km provincial roads and 95,406 km local roads in 1910, was reorganized in 1928 on the instructions of the then leaders Benito Mussolini. 137 particularly important roads have been declared public roads and henceforth managed by the Azienda Autonoma della Strada Statale newly established.

The state roads 10 to 19 form larger axes within mainland Italy.
