State of Damascus

The State of Damascus (French État de Damas, Arabic دولة دمشق Daulat Dimaschq ) was one of six states that were built by the French General Henri Gouraud under the League of Nations mandate for Syria.

History

After the Conference of Sanremo and the defeat of King Faisal monarchy over Syria, the state of Damascus was proclaimed on September 3, 1920, General Gouraud. The state Damascus Damascus as its capital comprised and the surrounding region as well as the Valley of Nahr al - Asi with the cities of Homs and Hama. The first president of the new state was Hakki Bey al -Azm.

The state Damascus lost four Qadas ( Subdistrikte ) that were part of the vilayet Syria during Ottoman rule. The territory is roughly equivalent to that of the Bekaa Valley and southern Lebanon. Together with the mainly Christian Mount Lebanon originated from him, the new state United Lebanon. Damascus and the predominantly Muslim population of the region protested throughout the mandate period against the removal of the Qadas and the subsequent Syrian Republic demanded the territories back repeatedly.

On June 22, 1922 General Gouraud finally announced the founding of the Syrian Federation ( la Fédération Syrienne ). These initially included the State Damascus, Aleppo and the Alawitenstaat. 1924 Alawitenstaat was removed again, and from the Syrian Federation was on 1 December 1924, the new state of Syria.
