State Security Service (Nigeria)

The SSS is one of three intelligence services, which were founded in June 1986 as a successor to the Nigerian Security Organisation ( NSO ). The resolution of the notorious NSO was an election promise of the new President Ibrahim Babangida, who annulled the prohibition of radical groups such as the National Association of Nigerian Students and the number of public executions reduced first. According to the observations, among others, Amnesty International and Reporters Without Borders, the SSS is since the 90s but again arbitrary and only with limited respect for human rights. The Student Association and other organizations were banned again, partially imprisoned hundreds of journalists, human rights activists and opposition activists without charge. 1988 Newswatch magazine was banned for six months.

Even after the death of military dictator Sani Abacha opposition newspapers and organizations, and public meetings continue to be suppressed; least, the private radio station Rhythm 93.7 FM was searched in Port Harcourt in March 2006. Director General of the SSS is Colonel Kayode Are, the headquarters is located in Abuja.
