Station biologique de Roscoff

The station biologique de Roscoff (SBR ) (also: Laboratory of Experimental Zoology ) is a marine biological and oceanographic research and teaching facility in France. It was by the physiologist and zoologist Félix Joseph Henri de Lacaze - Duthiers (1821-1901) founded in Roscoff on 20 August 1872.

Currently, the institute is with the Université Pierre et Marie Curie ( UPMC ), the Institut National des Sciences de l' Univers et de l' Environnement ( INSU ) and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS ) connected.

The following objectives are formulated: "Research, education and hospitality " ( French: Ses objectifs: la recherche, l' enseignement et l' accueil ).

Its tasks are:

  • To promote research and teaching on the biology of marine organisms and ecosystems,
  • Ensure access to the personnel as well as foreign scientists to the ecological and biological resources,
  • Implementation of long -term observations of physical, chemical and biological properties of the environment in the coastal areas around Roscoff.

Research is conducted in the field of molecular and cell biology, biochemistry and structural biology, bioinformatics, developmental biology, physiology, reproductive biology, genetics and population genetics.

Facilities include two research vessels ( 12-meter and 7 -meter vessels) and inflatables and diving equipment.

Survey

Roscoff is located on the north coast of Brittany in France, about 60 kilometers east of Brest and is characterized by an extraordinary variety of habitats from, of which most are accessible at low tide. These habitats include a variety of plants ( 700) and animal or marine animals (3000) in an easily accessible at low tide area within the intertidal zone and acceptable lighting conditions, even in winter.

Employees of SBR are about 200 permanent employees, consisting of scientists, teaching scientists, technicians, post-docs, PhD students and administrative staff.

These employees are organized in research groups in research institutions that are recognized by the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS ).

The various research groups are working on a wide range of topics ranging from the study of the fine structure and function of biological macromolecules to global oceanic studies. Special emphasis is placed on the scientific approaches of genomics, in particular by the Marine Genomics Europe, which is coordinated by the SBR.

Teaching at the SBR includes courses that are part of the master de l' UPMC and the European Socrates program. The SBR is a member of genomics network Ouest - biocluster and operates a genomics platform for DNA sequencing and mass spectroscopy as applied to biology back ( Séquençage spectrométrie et de masse appliquée à la biology).

The station published since 1960, a bilingual magazine Cahiers de biologie marine ( CBM). The SBR is also home to 12 to 15 national and international conferences each year, including the Jacques- Monod conferences.
