Stavern

Stavern ( 1799-1930 Fredriksværn ) is a small southern Norwegian port city, which belongs to the municipality Larvik Fylke ( province ) Vestfold. It has 5,514 inhabitants ( 1999).

Stavern was first mentioned in the 11th century. Until 1988 the city was an independent commune, it was annexed to Larvik. From 1675 to 2002 Stavern was a base first the Danish and the Norwegian Navy.

Today Stavern depends mainly on tourism, living in the summer months, including the vacationers 30,000 to 40,000 people in the city.
